Hate Mail

I've always objected strenuously to the theory that simply reading The State could make a person lose all judgment, perspective, and good sense. But after reading today's letters to the editor, well, I'm not so sure. First, there's this gem that unfavorably compares George Bush's proposed Social Security reforms to the terrorist mass murder campaigns:

They [Bush and the Republicans] are just as much a danger to America’s security as the terrorists they say they are fighting.

And then there's the inexplicably hysterical four paragraph rant about former President Carter not being included in the delegation to the Pope's funeral. I'm especially fond of the part where the reader expertly divines the late pope's wishes on the matter:

I’m sure the pope would much rather have had Jimmy Carter at his funeral than the official pack of warmongers and hypocrites.

This is just speculation, but isn't it at least possible that Carter isn't being snubbed? President Carter is over 80. Perhaps he wasn't up to the trip? Oh well, why extend the benefit of the doubt when you can simply assume the worst?

Dear Bill,

I enjoy your site very much. However, I wish you wouldn't make it so incredibly obvious the reasons for setting up the site. The idea you have is truly novel, however, it comes across as partisan and irrelevant because of the education debate you allude to so often. Picking on people who write in editorials won't increase hits to your site. Picking on the newspaper (which is your primary goal, I assume) will. Keep up the good work, and broaden your horizons on issues the newspaper covers.

Dear “Mr. Bill,”

Here’s an update of the sour slurs you've written about The State.

I just subscribed for home delivery so I can keep up with your attacks.

But first, did you miss their story the other day about the study done by the S.C. Board of Economic Advisors?

You seem to have ignored it. Why?

“Oooooo Noooo, Mr. Bill,” say it aint so that you ignored this gem of article that exposes PPIC as the wolf in sheep’s clothing that it really is.

http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/living/education/11379830.htm

The S.C. Board of Economic Advisors’ study shows Putting Parents in Charge would cost our state a half billion dollars.

It’s going to be hard for you to intelligently insult their motives and integrity, but I bet you will try.

One thing to remember is that the S.C. Policy Council PAID $50,000 for their study supporting PPIC.

The S.C. Board of Economic Advisors was not hired specifically to do a study.

For $50,000 I bet the S.C. Policy Council could get a professor of geography from Bugtussel University to do a study that proves the world is flat.

For $75,000 I could get a psychology professor from Hooterville College to do a study that would conclude the world revolves around you.

Here’s the update on your sour slurs, as I promised:

...lose all judgment, perspective, and good sense...
...inexplicably hysterical...rant... palpable nonsense...art of stupidity...

...simple enough for every cretin, imbecile, and Nina Brooke fan to understand...

Now you are hurting my feeings. I like Ms. Brooke and happen to think her articles and editorials are generally right on the money.

“Mr. Bill,” personal attacks are petty and reflect poorly on you and your blog.

Frankly, I’m ashamed to know you right now. Back to your slurs:

...how low has American education sunk...

Dear me, “Mr. Bill,” now maybe you have tipped your hand. It seems this is all about attacking public education.

That’s it, isn’t it? What do you have against quality public education for all children? Is it about ?

Again, back to your slurs:

...masochist...consistently lousy features...consistently lousy paper, mindless tripe...

Speaking of mindless tripe, the list goes on with your previous posts:

...masochist, lousy, mindless tripe, fluff-fest, über-nerd (fancy one), worst, alarmed, shoddy, gaping holes, biased, trashy, horrible, utterly miserable, klunker, odious, hackwork, cribbed, horrific, trolls…

“sheer, unadulterated ecstasy”
(a little kinky, “Bill”?)

…blathers, worst newspaper, bias, "reporter" (sarcastic quotes?), awful, less .awful, lies...

...allergic to accuracy, scare quotes, lazy, stupid or biased, distortion, biases, insufferable, jihad…

“…selective, second-rate, semi-literate, substance-free, bloviating, biased, nonsense reporting…"

Boom, blam, blammy...
...way to get’em Batman!
(yawn)

...outsized ego, whining, chicken little-ism...
...juvenile name-calling...
Bill, for you to accuse The State of name calling is pretty sad, dude.

Sweet dreams,
The Midnight Stalker

Why is it that the editors of The State and others of their ilk always describe any move to limit taxes in terms of a "cost" to our state?

The Midnight Balker writes:

“The S.C. Board of Economic Advisors’ study shows Putting Parents in Charge would cost our state a half billion dollars”.

Only a statist who believes that some or all of a citizen’s capital belongs to the state could possibly be so deluded.

I can imagine some more truthful statements:

“A study sponsored by the S.C. Economic Development Council showed that Putting Parents in Charge would pump a half billion dollars back into our state’s economy”.

Or maybe:

“A study sponsored by the S.C. Coalition for Property Rights revealed that Putting Parents in Charge will return a half billion dollars immorally confiscated from S.C. citizens back to the rightful owners”.

Re: Jimmy Carter:

According to this news story, Carter was invited to go to the Pope's funeral but declined:

Dear “Mr. Bill,”

The recent post by “anonymous” seems to mimic your strategy with words like “ilk” and “deluded” and “balker.” Is he trying to insult me or impress me?

He sounds like a broken recording of your MiniMe? www.minime.com

Well, I know how to answer “anonymous.”

Stick and stones may break my bones, but
Beware of the Wolf - say no to PPIC and vouchers - regardless of the form.
http://www.choosechildrenfirst.com/

We do not need PPIC. The issue of “separate but equal” schools was settled years ago.

The Midnight Stalker

P.S. As I promised, I will try to include things from time to time to brighten up your blog and help get your hit count up. If you don’t believe The State, go here and find something else to read:
