'Where did I misplace my facts?' asks State opinion page

The next time that The State tells me that we don't have to reform education in South Carolina because it's already improving so fast, I hope they take the time to look back at their own newspaper. Money quote:
Children born and educated in South Carolina are among the least likely in the nation to be successful in life, according to a report released Wednesday by an education trade publication.

The state ranked No. 41 in the latest national evaluation of public school quality, policies and socio-economic conditions by Education Week.

I've gone and read the report; it's pretty interesting stuff. (Naturally, there was no link on The State website nor was there a pointer in the paper edtion.)

I loved the quote in the article about how South Carolina does such a fine job of making a " seamless" transition from kindergarten to college. How can the word "seamless" be applied to a state where one out of two kids drops out?

Doesn't The State have its own personal economic incentive to obscure the truly bad situation with our public schools?

They own lots of real estate.

The odds of someone wanting to move here go down if they know the bad shape the schools are in.

The odds of people wanting to leave go up when they fully grasp how bad the schools are.

Looked at that way, The State is throwing a lot of fog around the sad reality of our situation in a self-interested move to prop up the value of their real estate holdings.
